Abstract

This project was designed to develop the curriculum of Critical Incident Stress Management(CISM) for the workers who are involved in disasters such as fire, floods, explosions of gas or air plane, etc.
Prior to developing the curriculum, four members of research team attended CISM workshop from June, 20 to June, 25 1999 in Hamilton, Canada.
The following steps were taken to develop of CISM curriculum.
1. The Study was conducted to identify the level of stress and mental health status of fire-fighters and rescue crews who are
confronting disasters every day. Th,., sample consisted of 183 subjects from 4 fire stations in Seoul area.
2. The contents of CISM curriculum weir
selected and the manual was developed by the researcher based on the above
research findings and the book "Critical
Incident Stress Management" by Mitchell
(1983).
3. A workshop was carried out by this
manual for 25 senior members of
fire-fighters and rescue crews on Dec.
13. 1999.
4. Based on the evaluation of the workshop, the curriculum of CISM was revised and the manual was printed 900 copies and was distributed to the Bureau of Administration, National Fire Control Center, and Fire Houses throughout the country.
Suggestions are made as follows;
1. The spread of CISM program to those workers in disasters are necessary.
2. It is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of CISM for nurses who work in emergency setting.
